The Sims moved to the big city; building a reputation among the comic-book personalities of the City.

The Urbz: Sims in the City brought the Sims universe into the big-city setting of the fictional City, letting players create their own character trying to make a name among the local personalities and build their own empire of popularity and housing. Compared to earlier console Sims titles, Urbz placed greater emphasis on social interactions with vivid, comic-book-styled figures from both local high society and the underworld, and on building reputation across several city districts each with its own character. Along the way, the player met parody versions of celebrities and local influential figures who handed out tasks in exchange for money and increased popularity. Reputation with individual factions affected access to new districts and special items, giving the player's progress a clearer direction than in previous entries in the series.

The visual style shifted toward a bolder, more stylized look inspired by modern hip-hop and graffiti culture, setting the game apart from the series' previous aesthetic. The soundtrack included licensed tracks by contemporary artists that fleshed out the urban atmosphere and distinguished Urbz from the traditionally lighter tone of earlier entries. The game retained the ability to improve housing and tend to the character's needs, but set these mechanics within a framework of completing missions for individual city factions, among which the player could choose which urban subculture to align with.

The Urbz was received as a fresh, if not revolutionary, addition to the console branch of The Sims series, praised for its distinctive urban-culture atmosphere and an interesting cast of characters. Critics occasionally noted that simulation depth had given way in favor of story missions, which nonetheless matched the intent of offering console players a more accessible experience. Today the title is seen as an interesting stylistic detour for the series, one that showed how flexible the Sims concept could be when adapted to different settings and audiences.

Why play it: For fans of The Sims series curious about its distinctive urban-culture atmosphere, even though simulation depth here gave way in favor of story missions.
