A sequel to the Forgotten Realms action RPG with a wider selection of classes, including the necromancer.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II expands the concept of an action RPG set in the Forgotten Realms with a larger story, new characters, and a more elaborate combat system. This time the player can choose from a wider selection of classes, including a necromancer who commands summoned skeletons, and travels across more varied environments, from city streets to underground labyrinths, sewers, and exotic regions far from Baldur's Gate, with this installment also supporting two-player play on one screen.

Compared to the first game, the sequel offered a deeper skill tree, more combo attacks, a more elaborate spell system, and the ability to summon companions into battle, making combat feel less repetitive and offering more tactical options. On Xbox, the game used the console's solid technical foundation to smoothly render larger battles and more spectacular spellcasting animations even in moments when dozens of enemies and visual effects roared across the screen at once, without the game noticeably slowing down. The audio side relied on orchestral music underscoring the epic tone of the story and on quality sound design of both combat and environments, which helped convey the feeling of a long, adventurous journey through a vast fantasy world full of danger.

Reviewers praised especially the more mature combat system and a longer, more satisfying campaign compared to the first game, though there were also complaints about occasional monotony in dungeon design, repeating enemy types, and less distinctive side quests. Dark Alliance II is now seen as the pinnacle of this console offshoot of Baldur's Gate and a pleasant retro experience for players who want to experience an action RPG set in the classic world of Dungeons & Dragons without having to deal with the complicated rules of the tabletop original, and its cooperative play ranks among the best the Xbox version has to offer.

Why play it: Thanks to a more mature combat system and a longer campaign, Dark Alliance II is the pinnacle of this console offshoot of Baldur's Gate, and its cooperative play ranks among the best the Xbox version has to offer.
