A snow-covered, quarantine-ravaged Manhattan as a fully fledged character of the whole story.

Tom Clancy's The Division brought players into a snow-covered, quarantine-ravaged New York, where an epidemic had, within a few days, broken civilization down into factions of looters, soldiers, and desperate survivors. The player takes on the role of an agent of a secret unit tasked with restoring order and tracking down the source of the outbreak, moving through streets full of snow, looted shops, and abandoned apartments bearing traces of what happened in the city. The game did not depict Manhattan merely as a backdrop but as a fully fledged character of the story, whose streets, subway stations, and underground tunnels carried their own narrative of a society's collapse.

The game combined a third-person cover shooter with looter-shooter and light RPG elements - weapons and gear had levels, stats, and rarity tiers, so the hunt for better loot formed the core of long-term motivation just as it does in full-blooded RPG titles. On Xbox One, the game benefited from a meticulously modeled Manhattan and a quiet, ambient score that heightened the sense of isolation amid a crowd of enemies. Co-op play for up to four players and a risky PvP zone called the Dark Zone added tension, since a player could lose their collected loot in an instant if attacked by other agents - or if they themselves chose to turn allies into adversaries.

After release, the game faced mixed reactions regarding the amount of content available to players who had already completed the story, which Ubisoft gradually addressed through extensive free updates and expansions that transformed the endgame beyond recognition. Even so, The Division showed that the looter-shooter genre could work outside a sci-fi setting, and it paved the way for its sequel as well as an entire wave of similar online shooters set in the real world. It is still remembered today mainly for its atmosphere, weighty gun sound, and visually striking snowbound city, which even years later feels chillingly believable and stands among the best-realized virtual depictions of New York in video games - something also appreciated by players who kept returning to its New York streets simply for the atmosphere alone.

Why play it: Its chillingly believable snowbound New York and weighty gunplay make it worth revisiting even today, though the endgame only truly came alive thanks to later updates.
