A hybrid of action game and TV series from the creators of Max Payne and Alan Wake, featuring time manipulation.

Quantum Break is a unique hybrid of third-person action and television series from the Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment, famous for titles like Max Payne and Alan Wake. The story follows Jack Joyce, who gains the ability to manipulate time-space after an accident during a time experiment, while the world around him gradually collapses due to so-called time fractures freezing the surroundings mid-motion. The game's strongest idea is precisely these frozen locations — a collapsed bridge or a falling container ship turns into a platforming puzzle, in which time moves only in brief flickers.

The gameplay combines cover-based shooting with striking time powers, letting the player trap enemies in a slowed-down bubble, dash forward as a blurred shadow, teleport behind opponents, or create a protective shield around themselves. Firefights therefore unfold in constant motion, and cover serves more as a moment to catch one's breath than a place to wait things out. The visual side used advanced particle effects and lighting to visualize frozen time and was among the technically most ambitious on Xbox One, though at the cost of a softer, blurrier image that divided contemporary reviews.

The game's most distinctive feature is its connection to a live-action television series of four long episodes, told from the perspective of the antagonist Paul Serene, whose content changes based on decisions the player makes at the end of each game chapter. The cast included well-known actors such as Shawn Ashmore, Aidan Gillen from Game of Thrones, and Lance Reddick, who lent the characters both face and voice. Although the concept of linking the game to the series divided critics and some players tended to skip the episodes, Quantum Break remains a bold experiment and a showcase of Remedy's creative ambition within Microsoft's exclusive portfolio.
