Killer Instinct
Killer Instinct was a launch title for Xbox One and a surprising reboot of the legendary fighting series from the nineties, this time developed not by the original Rare but by Double Helix Games and, in later seasons, Iron Galaxy, with Microsoft Studios itself taking the project under its wing. The game stood out with an unusual free-to-play business model, letting players try one regularly rotating character for free and unlock others individually or by buying the complete package, which was unusual for an exclusive console fighting game at the time. Thanks to this, even someone who would never pay full price for a fighting game got to try it.
The combat system built on the signature combo-breaker mechanics of the original series — long, lightning-fast chained damage combos can be interrupted by a precisely timed counter-hit matching the strength of the attack the opponent is currently using, while the attacker in turn can defend with a so-called counter breaker. Combat thus becomes a game of bluffing and reading the opponent, where understanding timing matters more than simple combo memorization. The game also offered an exceptionally thorough training and tutorial mode, still cited today as a model for how the genre should teach newcomers.
The roster included both returning classic fighters like Jago, Sabrewulf, and Glacius, as well as entirely new additions and later guest characters from other franchises, including General RAAM from Gears of War, the Arbiter from Halo, and Rash from Battletoads. The game received regular seasonal updates for years with new fighters, improved graphics, and reworked arenas, making it one of the longest-supported titles on the whole platform, aided by an aggressive electronic soundtrack that reacted to the flow of combat. Killer Instinct is still valued today as a technically deep, community-beloved fighter and proof that Microsoft can revive even long-forgotten franchises from its history.
