Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is the last major Japanese horror game to release on Wii U, and also the only entry in the series to reach the West through this particular console. The story unfolds around Mt. Hikami, a place tied to death and ancient rituals, and follows several characters whose stories alternate and gradually intertwine across chapters. The player explores abandoned houses, temples, and forests shrouded in rain and mist, armed only with the Camera Obscura, a camera that can capture and harm ghosts.
Combat therefore happens through the lens. The player must let a ghost approach, focus on it correctly, and pull the trigger at the moment of greatest danger, since the later the shot, the stronger the hit. The Wii U GamePad functions directly as the camera, held up in front of the player and aimed by tilting, making it one of the best-designed uses of motion controls on the entire platform. Water is the central motif of the whole game; getting soaked increases characters' vulnerability as well as their appeal to ghosts, and the rain-soaked environments give everything a heavy, cold atmosphere.
The pace is slow, and the game relies more on long stretches of building dread than on sudden jump scares. The sound design works with silence, the patter of rain, and distant voices, and music appears only where it's truly needed, which has a far greater effect on tension than a constant score. Contemporary reception was mixed; reviewers praised the atmosphere, environments, and use of the GamePad, but criticized the stiff character controls, repeated locations, and fragmented chapter structure. Commercially it was a niche title, yet the game later saw release on other platforms. Today it's an interesting reminder of a time when Japanese horror still relied on atmosphere rather than action, and also one of the few cases where the Wii U's unusual controls served the game's central theme directly. Anyone who enjoys slow, oppressive dread without action set pieces will find exactly what they're looking for here.
