Pandemic

Pandemic turns the usual logic of a disease game on its head: the player isn't playing a rescuer but the infection itself, trying to spread it across the world map before humanity manages to recognize and stop it. Controls run through a simple strategic interface where the player invests points into the traits of the infection - infectiousness, drug resistance, symptoms, and the method of transmission through air, water, or animals - and watches the color-coded infection spread between countries, while a ticking clock and rising public awareness work against them. The more visibly the disease kills, the sooner humanity notices it, so the player must choose between quiet, creeping spread and fast but conspicuous devastation.

The 2007 game was created by Dark Realm Studios and stood out for this reversed perspective, which was unusual on the web at a time before similarly themed mobile titles existed - instead of building a defense, the player controls the threat and must balance rapid spread against being too conspicuous, which would lead to an early vaccine. Simple world map graphics and clear statistics made it more of a turn-based strategy game about estimating risk than an action title, which secured it its own place among the Flash strategy games of the time and inspired later mobile titles on a similar theme that went on to achieve much wider acclaim.

Today, Pandemic is only available on archival Flash portals, since browsers dropped native Flash Player support long ago, and anyone wanting to play without emulation has to look for a different, technically current title on the same theme.
