Hole.io
Hole.io turns destroying a city into soothing, almost meditative fun. The player controls a black hole that crawls through the streets and devours anything smaller than itself — trash cans, benches, cars, and eventually entire buildings. The more the hole eats, the bigger it gets, and the bigger it gets, the more massive the objects it can swallow, creating a simple but addictive spiral of growth. The controls are trivial — just drag the hole in the direction you want to move — so the game works just as well with a mouse in the browser as on a mobile touchscreen.
The game comes from studio Voodoo, which made its name with exactly this type of so-called hyper-casual game — short, instantly understandable concepts designed for quick sessions between other activities. Hole.io benefits from clear visual feedback: the destruction of the city is flashy, easy to follow, and happens in real time against other players devouring the same city on the same map. Whoever's hole has swallowed the greatest volume of mass by the end of the time limit wins, which pushes the game from a purely relaxing activity toward a mildly competitive contest.
Simplicity here is both the greatest strength and the biggest limitation — after a few dozen matches, the game reveals nothing new, because the whole concept is exhausted within the first minute of play. But that was never its goal; the game was made as quick fun for moments between other activities, not as a title for long evening sessions. The multiplayer element also adds unexpected tension to an otherwise simple mechanic — rivals can show up in the same neighborhood and snatch your prey literally out from under you.
Why play: An ideal short break for moments when you want a few minutes of mindless destruction without having to learn anything.
