Sandspiel

Simulátor 2018 Max Bittker ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A physics sandbox pixel by pixel; sand, water, and fire behave almost like the real thing.

Sandspiel is a physics sandbox where every pixel on the screen follows its own simple rules, and yet the interactions between them produce surprisingly convincing behavior of real materials. The player picks from a palette of elements — sand falls and piles up, water flows and spreads sideways, fire spreads across flammable surfaces and turns them into ash or smoke — and simply draws them with the mouse or a finger directly into the simulated space. No goals, no points, just an open canvas where you can build dams, set forests on fire, or watch two liquids mix.

The game comes from Max Bittker and is technically remarkable for how it manages to calculate the behavior of thousands of particles in real time right inside a browser window, thanks to modern web technologies that allow powerful code to run without installing anything. It's precisely this accessibility — opening a link and experimenting with virtual physics within seconds — that is the main reason Sandspiel became a popular tip shared across social networks and forums devoted to generative and simulation toys.

The game belongs to the genre of so-called falling sand games, whose roots go back to older desktop experiments, but thanks to its web form and zero barrier to entry, it reached a much wider audience than such technical toys usually get. Its open source code and easy accessibility have also inspired a number of similar simulators and clones, which to this day keep expanding the palette of elements and their interactions.

Why play: For anyone who wants to play with virtual physics without installing anything and without rules, and watch complex behavior emerge from simple ones.
