Xenoblade
Xenoblade Chronicles first appeared in 2010 on the Nintendo Wii, created by Monolith Soft, and from the start it fused classic Japanese RPG storytelling with an open world and a combat system that replaced turn-based fights with automatic attacks paired with cooldown-based "arts". The series is defined by vast, interconnected worlds with their own geography and mythology, a character-affinity system that shapes dialogue and side quests, and sprawling stories balanced between science fiction and fantasy. The first game's defining image was a world built on the backs of two petrified titans, Bionis and Mechonis, giving the series an unmistakable visual identity from day one.
Following that success, the series expanded to the Nintendo 3DS with the remake Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and later to the Nintendo Switch, where a new line emerged: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (2017), a remaster of the original as Definitive Edition (2020), and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (2022), which tied the characters and stories of both earlier generations into one finale. The third entry is generally regarded as the series' peak for its scale and refined combat system, while the original game remains prized for the originality of its concept. Xenoblade helped prove that the Switch could carry large, visually ambitious JRPGs, and it contributed to a broader revival of open-world Japanese RPGs on consoles.
