Flicky
Flicky is one of those games built on a single brilliantly simple idea that manages to squeeze dozens of hours out of it. The player controls a blue bird whose job is to gather up a group of lost yellow chicks scattered across each level and lead them to the exit. The chicks line up behind the bird in a long chain and obediently mirror its movement, but as soon as a stray cat or lizard hits them, the chain breaks and the scattered chicks have to be gathered again. The reward grows with how many chicks you deliver at once, so the game constantly tempts you to take risks and try to bring the whole group in together.
The levels consist of several tiers of platforms connected by holes, and the player moves between them with short jumps that have nothing to do with the precise platforming of later years. Flicky slides and hops rather than jumping cleanly, which looks clumsy but quickly becomes an addictive rhythm. Items scattered around the scene, from flowerpots to telephones, can be thrown at enemies, and hurling them gives a satisfying sense of defending your own procession. The SG-1000 version works with simpler graphics than later conversions to more powerful machines, yet it stays readable and fast because it relies on large color areas and clearly distinguished sprites. The central melody is one of the most memorable pieces of early eight-bit Sega.
The game went on to receive a number of further versions, and Flicky gradually became one of the company's small icons, later appearing as a cameo character in other titles. Today Flicky feels surprisingly modern, since it's a pure arcade morsel with instantly understandable rules, short rounds, and a clear motivation to come back for a better score. That very immediacy makes the SG-1000 version a good entry point into Sega's output from a time when the company was still finding its own voice. The difficulty rises smoothly, with more enemies and tiers added, and you'll find yourself coming back mainly to try escorting the whole group of chicks in one go and rack up the highest possible bonus.
