Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife
Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife is a horror adventure by Swedish studio Fast Travel Games, built on the White Wolf tabletop game Wraith: The Oblivion, released on Quest in 2021. The player wakes up as a ghost trapped in their former home, Barclay Mansion, with no memory of how they died, and gradually explores dark corridors full of memories, puzzles, and dangerous entities called Spectres, which must be evaded and hidden from through stealth rather than fought openly. Uncovering one's own past unfolds through fragmentary memories and glimpses of events that once took place in the individual rooms.
The gameplay rests on stealthy exploration and ghostly abilities — the player passes through walls, possesses objects and living characters, moves between the world of the living and the realm of the dead, and looks into the house's past to uncover their own fate as well as the tragedy of the family that once inhabited the mansion. The gloomy Victorian architecture, dim candlelight, and nerve-wracking spatial sound design create an atmosphere of constant threat, even though the game relies more on tension, atmosphere, and story than on cheap, repeated jump scares. The sense of presence in VR is further heightened by the fact that the player literally walks through the walls of their own former home and watches the space around them shift between past and present.
Thanks to its strong story and thoughtful use of horror atmosphere in VR space, the title was well received at release as one of the best scary experiences on Quest, though due to its themes of death, guilt, and existential dread it clearly belongs among titles aimed at an adult audience. It is still valued today as an example of how well the psychological horror genre pairs with the sense of presence that only virtual reality can offer, and of how a tabletop RPG source material can be translated into a completely different interactive medium.
Why play it: For adult fans of psychological horror looking for a strong story and a dense atmosphere that only VR can offer, though the themes of death and existential dread are not for everyone.
