In Death: Unchained

Roguelike 2020 Superbright ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h 🔞 18+⭐ Must-play

A dark roguelike with a bow and arrows; precise aim decides survival.

In Death: Unchained is a dark roguelike archery title from Superbright, released in 2020 as an exclusive Meta Quest version adapted and expanded from the original PC game In Death. As a soul wandering after death, the player sets out through procedurally generated environments inspired by religious iconography, fighting angels, skeletons, and other supernatural enemies with a bow and arrows, where precise aim, quick targeting, and correct spatial positioning are key to survival. Death sends the player back to the start of the run, but unlocked abilities, artifacts, and weapons remain partially retained, driving the motivation for repeated attempts to get as far as possible.

The game's atmosphere is dark and oppressive - Gothic architecture, chilling music, and an inhospitable, hostile world create a sense of constant threat that works well thanks to spatial audio on the headset, even without photorealistic graphics. Optimization for the standalone Quest required simplifying the geometry and textures compared to the PC version, but the key mechanic of precise archery aiming remained untouched, and it is precisely this that is the main draw of the whole game.

At launch, In Death: Unchained was praised as one of the best proofs that demanding, skill-focused roguelike games can work just as well on mobile VR as on a more powerful PC. The title built a devoted community of players striving for the longest possible survival and the highest scores, and remains a reference point for archery mechanics in virtual reality as well as for roguelike design in general, since it offers a depth comparable to demanding PC roguelikes. Leaderboards for best results and daily challenges give players a reason to keep returning to the setting, and this has helped the title retain an active audience long after its release, becoming a frequently cited example of how to scale down a larger PC game for mobile VR without losing what made it fun.

Why play it: For fans of demanding roguelikes and archery mechanics who want depth comparable to PC titles, right on a mobile Quest headset.
