Switchback VR
Switchback VR is a launch on-rails horror game for PSVR2 in which the player takes on the role of an investigator heading into the sprawling underground complex of the Chronos Order and facing deformed monsters born from experiments with time. Movement is mostly automated or controlled through simple directional choices, so the player can focus entirely on aiming and shooting, while weapons are physically reloaded and held using the Sense controllers. Individual sections lead the player through dark corridors, laboratories, and fragments of warped reality where enemies suddenly emerge, and the game combines classic jump scares with tense atmosphere-building between encounters.
It was created as a spin-off of The Persistence's world by studio Firesprite and uses a similarly dark sci-fi-styled design full of metal corridors, flickering lights, and organic mutations. On PSVR2, the game fully takes advantage of high resolution and HDR to make the contrast between the darkness of the corridors and the sharp flashes of gunfire or monsters as effective as possible, and haptic feedback from the controllers enhances the feeling of reloading a weapon and landing a hit. Spatial audio plays a key role in building tension - distant footsteps, crackling electronics, or a sudden roar from around a corner can be heard from all directions before anything appears in view.
Switchback VR was received on release as a solid, accessible on-rails horror title that, thanks to its simplified movement controls, also works well for players prone to motion sickness, while still offering plenty of tense moments for genre fans. Reviewers particularly praised how the game manages to build tense pacing and several solidly memorable horror moments even with more limited movement freedom, without relying solely on simple jump scares. As one of PSVR2's launch titles, it served as a showcase of how well the classic format of a gripping horror ride translates to the new hardware with high resolution and precise haptics, and it remains a suitable choice for players who want to try the horror genre without needing free movement around the room.
Why play it: For players prone to motion sickness and horror fans looking for an accessible on-rails experience with tense pacing, solid horror moments, and quality haptics from the new headset.
