The return of Aya Brea from Parasite Eve to a dark New York; the key ability is Overdive.

After years, Aya Brea returns, the heroine of the cult Parasite Eve series — but this time in a form few fans would have expected. The 3rd Birthday is an action game with RPG and shooter elements that throws the familiar character into a dark, post-apocalyptic New York infested with monsters.

The core of the gameplay is third-person combat that combines cover, precise aiming, and a key ability called Overdive — Aya can „jump" into the bodies of allied soldiers on the battlefield, thereby instantly changing position, avoiding danger, or attacking from a better angle. This body-switching mechanic gives the battles a tactical dimension rarely seen in the genre, and she uses it both offensively and to survive desperate situations.

The game is production-ambitious: it bets on cinematic cutscenes, elaborate presentation, and the oppressive atmosphere of a ruined metropolis. Visually it was among the best the PSP had to offer at the time and showed how far a handheld console could be technically pushed. Story-wise it builds on the legacy of the Parasite Eve series, though it shifts the genre from the original RPG more toward action — a step that was controversial for some fans, but unmissable.

Between repeated playthroughs and gear collecting hides RPG depth — upgrading weapons and abilities rewards repeated play and experimentation with character builds. The game thus offers both an intense action experience and room for those who want to feel out the system in detail and optimize their Aya for the toughest clashes.

The 3rd Birthday is a title that divided opinions — but few would deny it its boldness and visual machinery. For PSP owners looking for a dark, action-tinged ride with unusual combat mechanics and a strong atmosphere, it is a memorable stop.

Why play it: A dark action ride with the legendary Aya Brea and the unique mechanic of jumping into other bodies — a production-ambitious experience for action fans.
