LittleBigPlanet 3
LittleBigPlanet 3 expands the series with new characters alongside the classic Sackboy - Oddsock, Toggle, and Swoop - each with their own special abilities used to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles scattered across the levels. The core of the game remains 2.5D platforming built on a physics engine, complemented by an extensive editor where players can create their own levels, minigames, and entire gameplay mechanics using elaborate tools and logic circuits, and then share them with the community around the world, including tools for custom scripted gameplay mechanics and simple minigames.
On PS4 the game offers smoother performance and more detailed textures made of fabric, wood, cardboard, and other materials that have long been characteristic of the series' visual style. The campaign takes the player through varied worlds with their own atmosphere and humor, the soundtrack combines licensed tracks with original compositions to build the series' distinctive fairy-tale mood, accompanied by the typical narrator commentary with English voice acting. Cooperative play for up to four players remains one of the pillars of the experience, whether in the campaign or in user-generated content, of which tens of thousands of levels exist after the game's release, spanning puzzles, platforming challenges, and minigames inspired by other genres.
At launch the game was received as a solid, if not groundbreaking, sequel, with the greatest praise going specifically to the expanded editor capabilities and the endless supply of player-created content. With this installment, Sumo Digital proved that the concept of a shared creative tool set within a platformer still has plenty to offer even years on, both to creators and to players looking for new content. Today the game appeals mainly as a huge archive of community creativity and a nostalgic piece for fans of the series from the first half of the PS4 generation.
Why play it: For fans of the series and players looking for a huge archive of community-made content - the greatest value comes from the expanded editor and the endless supply of user levels, rather than the campaign itself.
