Super Stardust HD

Shmup 2007 Housemarque ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h ⭐ Must-play

Classic asteroid shooting, this time on the surface of a round planet instead of a flat screen.

Super Stardust HD was one of the first titles to show that PlayStation 3's digital store could host games just as high-quality as boxed releases. It's a modern take on the classic asteroid-shooting concept, but instead of a flat screen, the action plays out on the surface of a round planet. The ship orbits the globe, the camera follows from above, and the player must constantly watch what's approaching from beyond the horizon, creating a peculiar tension that ordinary top-down shooters lack.

The core gameplay relies on three weapons that you switch between depending on the type of enemy: icy boulders, rocky asteroids, and golden fragments each require different ammunition, and anyone who doesn't learn to switch quickly will soon be swallowed by the debris. Added to this is a boost for quick escapes and a limited supply of bombs for emergencies. Each level ends with a boss fight, and the whole experience is built around repetition and improving your score, so a single run lasts tens of minutes, but return visits are frequent. Technically, it was excellent work, combining a fast, smooth picture with a huge number of particle effects and completely fluid performance even with hundreds of objects on screen, all accompanied by driving electronic music.

The reception was very positive, and the game became one of the flagship titles of the new service, often used to demonstrate the console's capabilities. Thanks to it, Housemarque earned a reputation as a studio specializing in modern arcade games and continued in this direction with further titles. Today, Super Stardust HD stands as a textbook example of a well-designed arcade game: the rules can be grasped within a minute, but mastery takes hours, and every failure has a clear cause that the player can see and correct on the next attempt.
