Criterion Games' reboot brings Burnout Paradise's freedom to illegal street racing.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted from 2012 by Criterion Games is a reboot of the popular series that carries the open-world, instant-action philosophy of Burnout Paradise over into the world of illegal street racing. In the open city of Fairhaven, the player takes part in races, police chases, and challenges, gradually unlocking new cars scattered around the map without having to work through a traditional career-and-money progression system. The emphasis on instant content availability and a seamless transition between activities was one of the main innovations, letting the player jump into any vehicle they had just discovered at any time. The Autolog system also compared results with friends and motivated players to repeatedly improve their times and records on individual sections, creating a subtle but effective competitive loop even outside direct multiplayer.

On PlayStation 3, the game ran on an improved Criterion engine with high-speed animation and impressive destruction effects for both environment and vehicles. The police chases were among the best executed in the entire series, featuring aggressive AI and dramatic music that heightened the tension of the escape, especially in the later stages of the game, when police deploy heavier vehicles and more precise tactics. The open world was designed to support exploration and the discovery of shortcuts just as much as pure racing, hiding a number of side challenges for more thorough players.

Critics received the game very positively, praising especially its fluid gameplay and the successful transplant of the Burnout Paradise concept onto the Need for Speed license. Many fans consider it one of the best entries in the entire series and a key demonstration of how an open world can work in arcade racing. Even today the game is recommended as an entry point for players looking for fast, accessible, and visually striking racing without unnecessarily complicated progression systems.

Why play it: For players looking for fast, accessible, and visually striking arcade racing without unnecessarily complicated progression systems, thanks to the successful transplant of the Burnout Paradise concept onto the Need for Speed license.
