LittleBigPlanet 2

Platformer/Sandbox 2011 Media Molecule LittleBigPlanet ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h

From platformer to game-making tool; logic circuits even allow entirely new genres.

The sequel expanded the original platformer concept into a full-fledged game-making toolkit, adding logic circuits, controllable vehicles, custom enemies, and entire game genres ranging from shooters to RPGs. In the campaign, Sackboy sets out to save Craftworld from the dark Negativitron, but the main added value remains the community content, which, thanks to the new tools, reached an incredible level of variety and technical sophistication that even Media Molecule itself hadn't anticipated. A key new feature was the Sackbots, programmable characters that could be given behaviors and roles, letting creators build actual enemies, allies, and story scenes for the first time.

The studio expanded the editor so much that players used it to build functioning musical instruments, RPG systems, and even simple computers. Tools for editing cinematic sequences, composing custom music, and linking levels into longer chains were added, resulting in entire multi-part series. The game also handled levels created in the first title, so the enormous library of community content wasn't lost. Reviewers praised the depth of the creative possibilities and the fun of the campaign, which made the game a popular platform for streamers and content creators long after release.

LittleBigPlanet 2 further cemented the PS3's position as the console with the strongest emphasis on user-generated content, an approach that later carried over into the same studio's Dreams experiment. The game also proved that a sequel can meaningfully deepen the original idea without losing accessibility for newcomers. It is still considered one of the most ambitious creative tools ever released on a console. Later updates allowed even more precise control over the mechanisms players built, and the community created entire genre subcultures of games within the game, from horror experiences to complex RPG systems with inventories and character leveling.
