Beyond Good & Evil HD
Beyond Good & Evil HD is an HD remaster of Ubisoft Montpellier's cult action-adventure, bringing to PlayStation 3 improved graphics and steadier performance for the original 2003 game. The player takes on the role of journalist and fighter Jade, who, together with her uncle Pey'j, runs an orphanage on the planet Hillys and gradually uncovers a conspiracy by the military organization DomZ, which terrorizes the country under the pretext of defending against an alien invasion.
The game combines open-world exploration, simple combat sections, stealth sequences, and photographing wildlife, which serves as a secondary but strongly character-defining activity — Jade documents the world around her as an investigative photographer, sending her photos to alternative media outlets exposing the truth. On PS3, the remaster preserved the original gameplay and distinctive visual style with bold, cartoonishly rendered characters, complemented by atmospheric, genre-spanning music that underscores both the adventurous and conspiratorial tone of the story. The environments of the planet Hillys, from the harbor town to underwater bases and industrial complexes, are among the things that still give the game its reputation as a carefully and cohesively built world.
Beyond Good & Evil has long been considered one of the most underrated titles of its generation, one that failed commercially on its original release but gradually built a cult-classic status prized for its originality, strong lead heroine, and well-thought-out world. The HD version on PS3 let a new generation of players discover this title and served as a reminder of why it's still cited as an example of a game that was in many ways ahead of its time, and why fans have long called for a full sequel, whose development has since been announced, delayed, and revived again over the following years without ever reaching a certain release.
Why play it: For players who missed the original, the HD version offers a chance to discover a strong heroine and a well-thought-out world in a title that was ahead of its time, and for which fans have long called for a sequel.
