Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga

RPG 2010 Larian Studios Divinity ⏱ Very long · 30+ h

An RPG from Larian Studios in which a dragon hunter learns to turn into a mighty dragon himself.

Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga combines two titles from the Belgian studio Larian Studios on PS3 – Divinity II: Ego Draconis and its expansion Flames of Vengeance – into one complete RPG package. The player takes on the role of a dragon hunter who gradually learns to control draconic powers and transform into a mighty dragon himself, giving the game an unusual dual perspective on combat – as a ground-based warrior and as a flying, devastating beast. The Flames of Vengeance expansion then pushes the story further, casting the player as a defender who must face an invasion by the forces the main hero had learned to control, this time from the perspective of a different, newly playable character.

The game offers a vast, open fantasy world full of side quests, puzzles, and a deep skill system that allows experimentation with different playstyles, from melee combat through magic to special abilities such as reading characters' minds, which often opens up unconventional solutions to quests. The PS3 version brought console players the entire complex crafting and combat system, though the technical execution and controls showed their PC roots. The atmosphere is rounded out by a distinctive, at times even humorous narrative tone and an orchestral score underscoring the epic scale of the story about the fight against a dragon cult.

Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga expanded Larian's fanbase even before the studio became famous for the Original Sin series, and it showcased the studio's typical approach to gameplay full of freedom, experimentation, and unconventional humor for which Larian is still known today thanks to the later Divinity: Original Sin series. For fans of Western RPGs it represents a hefty, content-packed title that, despite some minor technical flaws, offers dozens of hours of engaging fantasy adventure with an inventive dragon mechanic and a freedom that few console RPGs offered at the time.

Why play it: For fans of Western RPGs who will appreciate the freedom, experimentation, and unconventional humor typical of Larian even before the Original Sin series, along with an inventive dragon mechanic and dozens of hours of content.
