Hot Shots Golf Fore!
Hot Shots Golf Fore! from 2004 pushed the arcade series on the PlayStation 2 a step further by introducing a card system, through which the player collects and equips characters with special abilities that affect the ball's flight, spin, or behavior on the green. The basic, accessible three-button-press swing control stayed the same as in previous entries, but the deeper character and equipment progression system gave players more reasons to replay tournaments even outside the main story line and experiment with different card combinations depending on the course type and weather conditions. Cards could also be combined and swapped between rounds, so more experienced players could put together their own tactics for a specific course or opponent.
Developer Clap Hanz also expanded the roster of playable characters and courses and added new modes focused on collecting items and unlocking further cards, which brought Fore! closer to collectible-style fun built on a golf foundation rather than the purely sports-simulation approach of earlier entries. The visual style stayed true to the series' cartoon look, but the environments and character animations received further subtle improvements thanks to the experience the studio had already gained with the previous entry on the same console, including more elaborate crowd reactions and more detailed course models. Expanded multiplayer for several players on one screen was added too, letting players pit their own card collections against each other to see whose combination of abilities worked best on a given course. It's precisely this emphasis on collecting cards and building your own set of abilities that sets Fore! apart from the leaner early entries in the series and makes it a transitional point toward the more elaborate systems that appeared in later sequels on handhelds and newer consoles.
Why play it: Good for players who already know the series' arcade golf basics and want to add a collectible element with ability cards, deeper customization of their own golfer, and more reasons to keep coming back to tournaments.
