Retro City Rampage DX
Retro City Rampage DX is a wild top-down action game that looks like a lost title from the eight-bit era and behaves like a parody of the entire pop culture of the nineties. The player moves around an open city, steals cars, completes missions for shady clients, and along the way bumps into dozens of references to movies, TV shows, and older games. The structure combines story missions with free-roaming mayhem, arcade time trials, and collectibles scattered across the whole map, so alongside the main line there's plenty of reason to just wander the streets.
Shooting and driving follow the classic pattern of older top-down games, but the game adds a range of unexpected weapons and abilities that change the pace of individual missions. The DX version that the Vita received brought improved clarity, a new aiming mode, added missions, and the ability to customize the main character's look. It's precisely on the handheld that the game makes exceptional sense: missions are short, arcade challenges last a few minutes, and the pixel art looks sharp and clean on the small screen. There are also several visual filters mimicking old televisions and portable consoles. The package also includes a number of short minigames and nods to older genres, from simple platforming interludes to parodies of action games of the era, which gives the whole thing surprising variety and keeps the city driving from wearing thin quickly.
The audio side works with chiptune music that alternates fast action motifs with calmer melodies and nails the period mood precisely. Reception was mostly favorable, with reservations that the density of jokes sometimes outweighs the actual game design and some missions lack more careful polish. The title is one of the best-known examples of how a large game can be built by almost a single person. Today it feels like a charming time capsule that can be played in short bursts and that pokes fun at its own nostalgia just as gladly as it celebrates it.
