Corpse Party: Blood Drive
Corpse Party: Blood Drive closes out the horror series about a cursed elementary school and is also the first entry that didn't launch on older handhelds but directly on PlayStation Vita. Survivors from the previous games try to break the curse, but the way back into Heavenly Host Elementary School is one-way, and the game makes clear from the start that a happy ending isn't a given. The narrative splits between dialogue segments with drawn portraits and stretches through dark corridors, where you search for keys, note fragments, and a way to the next section.
Compared to earlier entries, the series has moved from a two-dimensional pixel perspective to a fully three-dimensional environment. The heroine moves with a flashlight whose battery drains, so light has to be rationed while also avoiding ghosts that can only be outrun or hidden from. There's more item collecting, simpler puzzles for opening up paths, and a system of multiple endings, the bad ones described in disgusting detail. The game is openly cruel, leaning on audio horror and helplessness rather than action, and practically requires headphones for the full experience. It also includes collectible diary fragments and side chapters that flesh out the school's background, along with several segments played as other characters in other time periods. Saving is only possible at designated spots, so even a short stretch of corridor can generate real tension.
Technically Blood Drive is the most divisive entry in the series. The environments are visually unremarkable and the game occasionally stutters, but the binaural audio ranks among the best on the whole platform and can turn a simple floor creak into full-blown panic. The music is minimalist and often steps aside for nothing but footsteps and breathing. Reception was cooler than for the older entries, mainly due to the technical state and the characters' slow movement, though fans appreciated that the story got a proper conclusion. Today it's a title for a dedicated audience that wants raw Japanese horror and doesn't mind the game prioritizing atmosphere over comfort.
