A prequel revealing the origins of the clan ninjas; tension is maintained by the warning ki meter.

A good stealth game calls for a sequel that expands the arsenal of shadows — and Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins from 2000 did exactly that. The second installment returns to feudal Japan, this time as a prequel that tells how young apprentices became the clan's deadly ninjas.

The core stays faithful to the first game: you sneak through fortified estates, watch the „ki" meter warning of nearby enemies, and strive for perfectly executed silent takedowns. Patience, reading the guards' movements, and exploiting verticality — moving across rooftops and from shadow to shadow — remain what separates a master from a dead ninja.

The sequel, however, adds more content and playable characters, including a new hero, thereby broadening the view of the world and the series' story. Each character offers their own perspective on the events, which adds variety and reasons to return to the game again.

The most notable new feature is the level editor, which let players build their own maps and share them — a remarkable step for its time that extended the game's lifespan far beyond the prepared missions. For the stealth genre it was an unusual openness toward the community and player creativity.

Tenchu 2 builds on its predecessor's solid foundations and polishes the formula that defined ninja stealth on the PlayStation. For fans of silent kills, feudal atmosphere, and sneaking across rooftops, it is a natural deepening of the experience the original Tenchu set in motion.

Why play it: For polished ninja stealth, a story about the birth of the assassins, and a level editor that put players' own shadows in their hands.
