Pico Dungeon

Roguelike ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A roguelike where no two runs are alike; its roots trace back to the dungeons of the 1970s.

Death lurks around every corner and no two expeditions are the same. Pico Dungeon is a roguelike for the PICO-8 fantasy console that brings one of the most demanding and at the same time most addictive genres into a miniature eight-bit package. The genre, whose roots reach all the way back to text dungeons of the late seventies, gets a fresh pocket form here.

PICO-8 from Lexaloffle is software imitating a made-up retro computer with sixteen colors, tiny resolution and a strict cap on code size. The roguelike is actually a perfect genre for this platform. It traditionally relies on simple graphics, often just tiles and symbols, and all the depth lies in the rules, not in the effects. That fits the philosophy of fantasy consoles exactly.

The key elements of the roguelike genre are procedurally generated levels and so-called permadeath. Each time you enter a differently assembled underground, and when your character falls you start from the beginning, often empty-handed. This mercilessness is paradoxically what draws players in. Every bit of progress is an earned victory and every death is a lesson. The tension of the unknown behind the next door is unmatched in roguelike games.

The PICO-8 community is exceptionally lively and roguelike games have a firm place in it, because they can be built cleverly and compactly. They are shared as cartridges playable directly in the browser, so you can start a new expedition within seconds and without installation. For a genre that invites repeated play, instant availability is a great advantage.

We do not have specific verified data about the release, authorship or reception of this game available, and therefore we make nothing up. What you can expect with certainty follows from the genre: randomly generated underground, the risk of permadeath, gradual learning of the rules and that sweet addiction to yet another expedition.

Why play: For nerve-wracking expeditions into a random underground, where you learn from every defeat and where no two games are ever the same.
