Jelpi
Jelpi is the official sample game that Zep, the creator of the PICO-8 fantasy console, bundled directly with the engine to demonstrate its graphical and audio capabilities. For much of the community, it became the very first game they launched after installing PICO-8, and it still serves as the system's unofficial "hello world" today. The player controls a colorful little character who jumps across platforms, collects items, and dodges simple enemies across small, clearly laid-out levels. It's not a sprawling adventure, but a compact demonstration of how, within PICO-8's constraints (128×128 pixel resolution, sixteen colors, a tiny memory limit), you can build a playable and visually legible platformer without the design having to make major compromises in clarity.
Technically, Jelpi demonstrates the genre's basic building blocks: smooth jumping, collision detection with the environment, and a simple musical loop that accompanies the player through the levels. Controls are deliberately minimalist, so the game can be grasped within a few seconds, making it popular material for tutorials and the first steps of beginning developers who want to dig through the source code and learn how PICO-8 works under the hood — Jelpi's code is often one of the first examples newcomers try tweaking, whether to change character behavior or add their own levels. The chunky-pixel, bright-color visual style became something of a visual template for much of the later work on this platform, and many later games consciously or unconsciously build on it.
Today, Jelpi is played more for nostalgia and its historical significance than for gameplay depth — it's a short, undemanding experience that can be finished in a few minutes and never aspired to be a full-fledged commercial title. Even so, it remains an important point in PICO-8's history: it showed that the fantasy console could deliver genuinely playable content and inspired hundreds of independent creators to try their own platformers and action games on the limited platform. For new players, it's still a recommended first step before diving into the larger body of titles the PICO-8 community has amassed since 2015.
Why play it: More for collectors of PICO-8 history than for gameplay depth — a short, undemanding title that stood at the fantasy console's birth and inspired hundreds of other creators to make their own platformers.
