Blade & Sorcery
Blade & Sorcery built its entire concept on physics-based melee combat – swords, axes, bows and spells aren't controlled through scripted animations but through the actual movement of your hands, with the game calculating in real time a weapon's weight, angle of impact, and the force needed to pierce or sever. The result is combat that never looks the same twice and whose outcome depends purely on how the player physically aims and strikes, setting the game apart from any scripted combat animation in ordinary action games.
The game began as a small one-developer project and, through Early Access on Steam, gradually grew to include an extensive magic system, firearms inspired by the fantasy world, ragdoll physics for enemy bodies, and later mod support, which made it one of the most moddable VR games ever – the community added its own weapons, environments, and entire game modes. The graphics are restrained, focused mainly on the functionality of the physics system, but it's precisely the raw and often graphically violent presentation of combat that gave the game a reputation as a technical showcase for physical interaction in VR. The absence of music and the emphasis on the sounds of impacts, metal scraping of weapons, and characters' breathing underscore the sandbox nature of the game, where the atmosphere is created above all by the player's own style of combat.
Blade & Sorcery became one of the most-cited examples of what virtual reality is capable of in melee combat, and it inspired numerous other titles that attempted a similar approach to physical combat. Even without a fixed story or goal, thanks to its endless combat variability and mods it remains one of the most-played sandbox VR games on PC and is often cited as the first title new headset owners use to demonstrate to others just how convincingly virtual reality can simulate physical combat.
Why play: For the endless variability of a physics-based combat sandbox and a rich modding scene, Blade & Sorcery is often the first demo headset owners show to others.
