Unreal Tournament 3

Aréna střílečka 2007 Epic Games UnrealUnreal Tournament ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

A graphical leap thanks to Unreal Engine 3; arena combat complemented by vehicles and a story campaign.

Unreal Tournament 3 followed up on its successful predecessors and brought a graphical leap by deploying Unreal Engine 3, which was at the time among the most advanced available technologies and was used in a number of other major games across genres. The game kept the core of arena combat — fast movement, jumps, and the series' characteristic arsenal of weapons — and complemented it with vehicles and a more elaborate campaign mode, set within a conflict between humans and the robotic Necris race, told from the perspective of a mercenary team.

Multiplayer modes included classic deathmatch, capture the flag, Warfare as the successor to Onslaught, and other variants of team battles on sprawling maps full of vehicles and strategic points that had to be progressively captured and defended. Visually, the game looked significantly better than its predecessors thanks to advanced lighting, detailed character models, and more elaborate environment textures, which at the same time raised the hardware requirements and demanded a fairly powerful computer at the time of release. Partly because of this, the game failed to reach the same popularity as UT2004, also partly due to strong competition in the online shooter market at the time of its release.

The sound design and electronic music continued the series' style, and the atmosphere remained fast-paced and competitive, though the overall tone was somewhat more serious than in previous entries. Critics praised the technical execution, the clarity of the combat, and the movement system, but at the same time saw the game as less groundbreaking than its predecessor and less innovative compared to the competition on the market at the time. Looking back, Unreal Tournament 3 is remembered as the series' last major entry and a showcase of what the peak of Epic Games' technology looked like before the rise of free-to-play shooters, which later came to dominate the online market and reshaped the genre.

Why play it: For fans of fast arena combat who will appreciate a technically polished movement system and clarity, even though it's more the series' last major entry than a genre breakthrough.
