A sequel to Attentat 1942; conflicting memories of the war's end in postwar Czechoslovakia.

Svoboda 1945: Liberation is an adventure game from Charles Games that follows on from Attentat 1942 and moves the player to a small Czechoslovak town at the end of the Second World War and in the first postwar years. Playing a present-day character, the player explores the town residents' memories of the liberation, the postwar expulsion of the German population and the arrival of the new regime; different witnesses remember the same events differently and often contradictorily, so their testimonies must be compared and their agreements and discrepancies sought out, which in themselves say something about the character of the narrator and about how people come to terms with a difficult era, or instead push it out of their own memory.

The game again combines drawn graphics with documentary materials and real testimonies, but this time works with an even more open narrative structure, where the player themselves pieces together whose version of the story is more plausible, without the game clearly hinting at a single, unambiguous truth. Mechanically it's a classic dialogue-driven adventure with an emphasis on listening to and comparing testimonies, without action elements or classic logic puzzles, which keeps the focus mainly on the content of the stories rather than on gameplay challenges. The atmosphere is completed by sensitive, subdued music and authentic period photographs and recordings, which give the game documentary weight and remind the player that this is a real historical period.

Svoboda 1945: Liberation continues Charles Games' line of educational games and again shows how sensitive chapters of national history can be handled in interactive form without simplifying them into clear heroes and villains. The game is particularly valued for how it manages to show the many layers of the postwar period, when the line between victim and perpetrator wasn't always clear, and how strongly the emotions of the time influenced the decisions of ordinary people at a moment when the entire society around them was suddenly changing.

Why play it: Thanks to its sensitive, unsimplified treatment of the postwar period without clear heroes and villains, this is a valuable probe into a morally ambiguous chapter of Czechoslovak history.
