Space Engineers
Space Engineers is a space construction simulation from Keen Software House, a Czech development team founded by Marek Rosa. The game put a block-based building kit into players' hands, letting them build their own spaceship, mining base, or entire orbital station, all with honestly simulated physics of mass, engine thrust, and structural integrity. It is not just a creative toy - the game also offers a survival mode, where you need to mine ores, smelt them, and build increasingly complex machines, all while facing potential shortages of oxygen or power. Particular attention was earned by the so-called programmable blocks, which can be controlled with the player's own scripts, turning the game into a popular tool for experimenting with automation and simple machine logic.
On PC the game runs on its own VRAGE engine, which handles destruction and physics in real time across a huge number of blocks, which was technically ambitious at the time of release and remains demanding on hardware to this day. The atmosphere is rounded out by quiet space music and sounds that emphasize the loneliness of open space, where the only sound is often the hum of your own ship. Space Engineers gradually built up a loyal community of builders and modders, who created thousands of workshop creations for the game, from replicas of real rockets to fantasy cruisers. The game also supports multiplayer and dedicated servers, on which entire cooperative economies and survival scenarios emerge, and later added support for virtual reality, letting players explore their own creations from a first-person perspective with a much stronger sense of scale.
The game spent a long time in Early Access, which allowed the studio to listen to the community and gradually improve the building system before it reached its full release form. Today Space Engineers is considered one of the most complete building simulations of the genre and has inspired a number of other titles built around block construction, from smaller indie projects to more ambitious sci-fi sandboxes. The studio supported the game long-term with paid expansions adding new planets and technologies, and even years after release it remains actively played thanks to mods and regular updates.
Why play it: Thanks to its elaborate building system and long-term support through mods and paid expansions, Space Engineers remains to this day one of the most complete building simulations of the genre.
