No Man's Sky
No Man's Sky is a space sandbox built on a procedurally generated galaxy, in which the player, after crashing their ship on an unknown planet, repairs its engines, gathers resources, and takes off above the atmosphere for the first time. From there, there's no invisible wall: you can fly to a neighboring planet, to another system, and theoretically all the way to the galaxy's center. Every planet has its own fauna, flora, weather, and mineral composition, with some being paradise-like and others toxic or cold enough that surviving outside for even a few minutes requires constantly recharging your suit's protection. The game is heavily about calm exploration and about naming whatever the player discovers first.
The gameplay loop combines exploration with crafting and trade. The player mines elements, uses them to build upgrades for their suit, multi-tool, and ship, seeks out better vessels at wrecks and stations, and trades between systems with differing prices. Alongside that there's building ground bases, mining resources, managing a freighter with its own fleet, and a multilayered story about the galaxy's origin and the beings watching over it. Combat takes place both on the surface against robots guarding nature and in space against pirates, though action is never the main reason to play.
The 2016 launch was rocky, since the finished game didn't match what players had been promised by the early demos. The studio kept fixing and expanding it over the years through major free updates that added co-op, base building, land vehicles, VR support, and a range of other systems, so today's version is incomparably richer than the original. Visually the game rests on saturated, almost poster-like colors and on music that shifts dynamically with the environment, fitting perfectly with slow gliding over an alien landscape. Today it's one of the best examples of how long-term care can save a game. On PC it runs well even on older hardware, offers ultrawide monitor support, and suits both a few relaxing evenings and hundreds of hours spent building your own space empire equally well.
