DiRT Rally
DiRT Rally is the series' return to hardcore rally simulation, released in 2015 initially, and surprisingly, in early access without much fanfare. The game abandoned the spectacle, jumps, and arcade tone of previous entries and focused on a single thing: driving down a narrow special stage where everything depends on the player and their co-driver. The stages are long, often over ten kilometers, running through snowy Wales, gravel Greece, or Finnish dirt, and can't be memorized right away, so the player really has to listen to the pace notes. The career progresses from old cars to modern four-wheel-drive machines and championships around the world.
The driving model is demanding and unforgiving. The car carries inertia on gravel that must be anticipated, braking on the edge of a drop-off ends in the guardrails, and one botched corner can wreck the cooling or the dampers, because damage is permanent and repairs are handled within a limited time at the service area. There's no rewinding time, so a mistake means a loss you have to drive out to the finish with. Alongside rally, the game offers rallycross on real arenas and hillclimbs up Pikes Peak. Over time an online mode with daily and weekly challenges was added, keeping the game alive.
Technically, it was an excellently optimized game that, on PC, offered a sharp image, convincing surfaces, and changeable weather. Sound is one of its strongest points; the noise of gravel flying into the wheel arches, the muffled roar of the engine in the cabin, and the co-driver's calm voice create an unusually intense focus. Critics and players received it very well precisely because it finally offered a seriously intended rally game on PC, and its successor expanded the concept further. Today, DiRT Rally remains one of the best ways to experience why rally is considered the toughest motorsport discipline. On a modern PC it runs without issue even at high resolution, and with a wheel, or at least sensitive gamepad triggers, it offers a focused drive after which the player really does take a deep breath at the finish.
