Space Engineers' sister title set in the Middle Ages; castles and catapults with proper collapse physics.

Medieval Engineers is a construction simulation from Keen Software House, a sister title to Space Engineers that transplants the same block-building principle from the sci-fi setting of space into a medieval environment. The player builds castles, catapults, bridges, and mills out of individual blocks and must respect the physics of weight, material strength, and structural load - a poorly designed tower can collapse just as it would in reality. The game also works with deformable terrain, so you can dig trenches, mine stone from a quarry, or level a path for building fortifications, which sets it apart from many other construction titles.

The game runs on a modified version of the VRAGE engine and builds technically on the experience gained developing Space Engineers, including destruction physics and simulation of moving mechanisms such as water wheels, treadmills, or drawbridges. The visual style is warmer and more down-to-earth than its sci-fi predecessor, with an emphasis on wood, stone, and blacksmithing, and the sound design leans toward a calm, folk-inspired atmosphere of village life. However, the game never quite stepped out of the shadow of Space Engineers, and player attention focused mainly on the circle of builders who appreciated the ability to build a functioning medieval village, a water-powered mill, or a siege engine with a realistically simulated impact trajectory.

Unlike its space-set sibling, Medieval Engineers never gained as broad a player base, and development was slower, yet it remained popular among creators who wanted to explore historical construction in a game environment without having to deal with space technology. Keen Software House kept maintaining it with updates, and today the game serves as an interesting example of how a single game system and technological base can be carried over into a completely different thematic setting while preserving the same depth of construction physics.

Why play it: For players who want to explore historical construction without space technology, Medieval Engineers offers the same depth of construction physics as its space-set sibling, just with a smaller player base.
