Mashinky
Mashinky is a strategic building game about constructing a railway network, programmed single-handedly by Czech developer Jan Zeleny. The player starts with a single steam locomotive and gradually builds tracks, stations, depots, and connects mines and factories to the network in order to get raw materials to buyers as efficiently as possible. As the years pass, more modern locomotives and wagons unlock, from steam engines to electric units, pushing the game across more than a century of railway history and forcing the player to rebuild older lines so they can handle faster and heavier trains. Besides railways, players can also build road transport with trucks and buses, gradually turning the logistics network into a truly multi-layered transport system.
Visually the game relies on a cozy low-poly style with bright colors, which contrasts with a fairly deep economic and logistics core - the player has to deal with track capacity, train routing, crossing tracks, and gradually expanding the network so that no bottlenecks form and trains don't fall behind schedule. The music and train sounds create a calm, meditative atmosphere typical of building strategy games of this type, and players spend a lot of time simply watching a train wind smoothly through the landscape between hills and bridges. Mashinky was especially appreciated by fans of building and transport simulation genres as a smaller but honestly crafted alternative to bigger series like Transport Tycoon or Railway Empire, with its own clearly readable visual language. The game also offers generated maps as well as hand-crafted scenarios, so each player can choose between free-form building and completing predefined challenges with specific goals.
The game spent a long time in Early Access, and even after release its author kept supporting it with further updates, new locomotives, and improvements to the building tools, so the content kept expanding even after reaching the full version. Even today Mashinky is valued as an example that a polished and playable building strategy game can be created by a single independent developer without the backing of a large studio, and thanks to that the game earned respect within the community of train simulation fans around the world.
Why play it: Thanks to its elaborate building strategy, created single-handedly by an independent developer, Mashinky has earned respect among fans of train simulations around the world.
