Hidden & Dangerous 2
Hidden & Dangerous 2, from 2003, is a tactical action game set during the Second World War, in which the player commands a small commando team operating behind enemy lines. Between missions, the player can switch control between up to four soldiers, each with their own equipment and role, ranging from sniper through demolition expert to a heavily armed machine gunner, which calls for careful planning of the advance rather than frontal assaults. The player can give basic orders to their squadmates and split them into smaller groups in order to cover several directions of attack at once, turning individual missions into small tactical puzzles rather than straightforward firefights.
The missions take the player across several battlefields of the Second World War, from the European countryside to more distant fronts, combining stealthy infiltration, sabotage, and firefights, and the game rewards patience and the use of terrain cover over reckless shooting. A shortage of ammunition and limited equipment force the player to approach combat cautiously and not waste rounds on targets that can be avoided. The graphical rendering of the landscape and battlefield was solid for its time and helped convey the harsh atmosphere of wartime conflict, reinforced by the fact that characters can easily be wounded or killed and must be given first aid during combat. The game builds on the successful first installment from 1999 and expands its concept with more modern presentation, a more elaborate environment, and smoother squad control, making tactical decision-making more accessible without the game losing its demanding nature.
Hidden & Dangerous 2, from the Czech studio Illusion Softworks, ranks among the respected representatives of the tactical war game genre, and thanks to its demanding nature and emphasis on realistic tactical approaches, it still maintains a circle of loyal fans even years later who appreciate that the game never slips into simplistic action solutions.
