Standalone Gwent from The Witcher 3; unit strength adds up across three rows instead of mana.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game originated as a standalone expansion of the popular minigame from The Witcher 3, and in 2018 CD Projekt Red released it as a full-fledged free-to-play title with ambitions to rival the genre's biggest names. Unlike typical CCGs built around spending mana, here players play cards into three separate rows (melee, ranged, and siege combat), where unit strength simply adds up, and the winner is whoever has the higher total after winning two of three rounds — so the player must also think strategically about when it's advantageous to concede a round and save cards for the next one.

This row system, the absence of mana constraints, and the emphasis on card effects that change turn order or wipe out entire rows make Gwent a mechanically distinct experience from Hearthstone or Magic, even though it shares the basic CCG framework of collecting cards and building decks from factions like the Northern Kingdoms, Nilfgaard, Skellige, Scoia'tael, or Monsters. The cards draw on the rich universe of The Witcher, and their artwork is among the most striking in the genre, with animated portraits and atmospheric music that continues the series' tradition.

After release, Gwent underwent several major reworks of both balance and visuals, including a complete overhaul of the card artwork into fully 3D form, reflecting the studio's long-term effort to find the ideal shape for the game in the competitive world of digital card games. The game also included a system of optional leader abilities for the factions, activated once per match, capable of fundamentally changing the course of a duel. Although it never achieved Hearthstone's mass success, it built a loyal community of players who appreciated its different approach to the genre, the tactical depth of the row system, and its deep roots in the respected fantasy world of the Witcher saga, whose atmosphere it managed to carry over to PC even outside the main series of games from CD Projekt Red. The game also featured regular tournaments and seasonal ladders, through which the studio worked long-term to keep Gwent alive as an active competitive platform alongside its classic player base.

Why play it: For players seeking tactical depth and a different approach to the card game genre, set in the atmosphere of the Witcher world, even if it never surpassed Hearthstone's mass success.
