A roguelike starship-command sim you can pause anytime to direct your crew.

FTL: Faster Than Light is a roguelike starship command simulator in which the player, as captain fleeing a hostile fleet, flies through a galaxy full of randomly generated encounters in order to deliver crucial data to an allied fleet. The game runs in real time with the option to pause at any moment and give orders to the crew — rerouting power between shields, weapons, and engines, putting out fires, repairing systems, or sending crew members to defend the ship's sections against boarders. Every decision, in combat and out of it, has immediate consequences for the whole crew's survival.

Between battles, the player explores the star map, gathers resources, hires new crew, and upgrades the ship, while the choice among several available vessels and their unique equipment fundamentally changes the play style. Death in FTL is permanent — once the ship is destroyed, the game returns to the start with a new randomly generated galaxy, which makes every run a unique and tense story full of improvisation. Simple yet distinctive pixel-art graphics and an atmospheric ambient soundtrack perfectly underscore the feeling of a lone ship lost in a hostile universe.

At the start, the player chooses one of several ships with a different crew and starting equipment, while additional vessels must be gradually unlocked by fulfilling special conditions, adding a further layer of long-term goals beyond a single run. Encounters along the galaxy include traders, pirates, space patrols, and civilian ships in distress, and every choice — from attacking through negotiating to simply flying past — can lead to unexpected consequences for the crew and fuel supplies.

FTL first launched as a successfully funded Kickstarter project from a small two-person studio and became one of the most influential titles to popularize the modern wave of roguelike games outside traditional genre circles. Critics praised the tension generated by the combination of tactical management and randomness, as well as its high replayability. The game is still cited today as a key inspiration for a whole generation of indie strategic roguelike titles, and its free Advanced Edition expansion further enriched it with new content.

Why play: For fans of tactical roguelikes, this is a key inspiration for the entire genre wave, built on the tension from combining crew management with the randomness of encounters in space.
