Guild Wars 2
Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG set in the world of Tyria that, on release in 2012, deliberately tried to break several genre conventions. There's no monthly subscription, just buy the client, and there's no classic holy trinity of tank, healer, and damage dealer; every profession has its own way to defend, heal, and support others. The story begins with a choice of race and personal questions that shape your own narrative thread, and continues with a shared campaign against ancient dragons. The world is colorful, visually striking, and full of places that invite exploration rather than checklist-ticking.
Instead of classic quest boards, the content in the world is built on dynamic events. When a player arrives at a spot where centaurs are attacking a village, they simply join in, and everyone who contributed gets a reward. Nobody competes over killing the same enemies, and players help each other completely naturally. Event outcomes also change the surroundings, so a lost village defense has consequences. Combat is mobile, with dodging, combo fields, and weapons that directly determine available skills. Alongside this, the game offers extensive PvP, massive three-server battles over fortresses, and a deep layer of cosmetic progression.
Technically, this is a game that has aged well thanks to its stylized art direction, and even today on a modern PC it looks good and runs smoothly, though large battles put a strain mainly on the processor. The soundtrack is unusually rich, orchestral, and carries strong themes for the big moments. Reception was very positive, mainly thanks to its accessibility and subscription-free model. The game has since received several major expansions and is still ongoing, so a new player today gets an enormous amount of content and an MMO that doesn't force them to complete chores every evening. That very relaxedness is the main reason players return to it after years: just log in, join the first event you stumble across on the way, and the evening is filled without any need to plan anything ahead.
