A dark fantasy RPG with six distinct openings based on the main character's race and origin.

Dragon Age: Origins is a dark fantasy RPG set in the kingdom of Ferelden, which faces a catastrophe called the Blight — an invasion of corrupted creatures led by an archdemon. The player becomes one of the Grey Wardens, the order that alone is capable of stopping the threat, and must gather allies from among humans, elves, dwarves, and mages just to be able to raise an army at all. The title refers to six different opening chapters based on the character's race and background, which differ not just in setting but also in how others perceive the player later on. As a result, replayability is unusually high.

The game deliberately builds on classic computer RPGs. Combat runs in real time with the option to pause, the camera can be pulled up into a tactical overhead view, and the player commands a four-member party whose composition decides whether a fight goes smoothly or grinds to a halt. This is complemented by a tactics system that lets companions be given simple conditional behaviors in advance. Above all of this stand the conversations and relationships with companions, who have their own opinions, can leave the player or even turn against them, and the game's final decisions rank among the best-written dilemmas in the genre.

Technically it was the studio's own engine, which on computers offered higher detail and a tactical camera absent from the console versions, so the PC release was long considered the definitive one. Visually the game bets on grime and blood that stays on characters even after a fight ends, reinforcing its grim tone. The music works with dark orchestral motifs and a sung theme that players still remember today. Reception was very good, and the game became one of the pillars of modern fantasy RPGs. Today it feels slow-paced and some locations repeat, but the strength of the writing, the party, and the consistency with which the game carries the consequences of decisions keep it at the top of recommended titles.
