Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare from 2016 took the series into orbit and open space - Infinity Ward built the campaign around the command of the spaceship Retribution, from which the player sets out on individual ground and shipboard missions, interspersed with fighter dogfights between planets and combat against the Settlement Defense Front faction. The game was released simultaneously for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and offered the same content on all platforms: a campaign, competitive multiplayer with the Combat Rig specialist system, and a cooperative Zombies in Spaceland mode, tuned to eighties retro aesthetics with a shopping mall as its setting.
The core of the game was identical across all versions - the same missions, the same maps, and the same progression for unlocking weapons and specialists in multiplayer, so choosing a platform was mainly a matter of preferred controller and available hardware. The differences showed up mainly on the technical side: console versions ran at a target performance of around 60 frames per second at a native resolution matching that generation's capabilities, while the PC version allowed unlimited frame rate, higher texture resolution, longer draw distance, and more precise mouse control, which many competitive multiplayer players preferred. The campaign also included passages of free movement around the mothership between individual missions, where you could talk to the crew and track campaign progress on the map, which was handled identically on all platforms.
The PC version ran on Steam, supported an adjustable aspect ratio, and was the only one to offer unlimited frame rate, support for higher resolutions, and fine-tunable graphics detail beyond what the consoles could do. The release, however, was met with a strongly divided reaction from part of the PC community - mainly because, unlike the console editions, the PC version did not include the remastered Modern Warfare Remastered at launch at all, and players had to purchase it separately later, which led to a significant wave of negative user reviews on Steam shortly after launch.
Why play: For players with a powerful PC it offers unlimited frame rate and higher resolution, but keep in mind that the Modern Warfare remaster was missing here and had to be bought separately.
