Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 2 builds on the success of the first installment and once again tells the story of World War II through three storylines, this time following a Soviet soldier defending Stalingrad, a British soldier fighting Rommel's forces in the North African desert, and an American paratrooper taking part in the Normandy landings and the subsequent campaign across Europe. The mission-by-mission structure remains similar to the first game, but it brings significantly more polished level design, smoother pacing, better balanced action, and less frustrating checkpoints, making the campaign feel more accessible to a wider audience.
One of the main innovations is a system of automatic health regeneration, which replaced earlier health packs and later became the de facto standard for nearly the entire action shooter genre for years to come. The game ran on a new engine with improved lighting, destructible environments, and better character animation, allowing it to look significantly better than the competition and showcase monumental battle scenes such as the siege of the El Alamein fortress or the dramatic defense of Pegasus Bridge during the paratrooper landings. The audio was among the absolute best of its time, with intense battle sound, thundering explosions, and unmistakable orchestral music composed by Michael Giacchino.
Call of Duty 2 received near-unanimous critical acclaim upon release and is still considered one of the high points of the entire series and of the war shooter genre in general. The game helped cement Call of Duty's dominance in the market and set a bar that competing series, including Medal of Honor itself, had to catch up to, its later entries responding to that pressure. Even with the passage of years, the campaign remains an intense and well-constructed experience that many players today still rank among the very best individual entries in the entire long-running series.
Why play it: For war-shooter enthusiasts looking for one of the high points of the entire series, whose intense and well-constructed campaign holds up even after many years.
