Botanicula
Botanicula from 2012 is a point-and-click adventure from studio Amanita Design, in which the player controls five small plant-like creatures trying to save the last seed of their home tree from parasitic pests. Unlike most adventure games, the player does not control a single character here but switches between five distinct companions, each with their own ability useful for solving puzzles and overcoming obstacles on a journey through a forest world full of small creatures and plant beings. The five heroes must cooperate to escape the dark spiders threatening their home, and the game often resolves this cooperation through simple but inventive puzzles built on combining the individual characters' abilities.
The game is characterized by its playful, almost childlike humor and lush imagination, where almost every element of the environment is interactive and rewards the player with a small sound or animation gag, whether it's tapping a mushroom or waking a sleeping little bug. The visual style follows the studio's signature look known from previous titles but pushes it into an even more colorful and playful world full of strange creatures, where even the smallest root or seed has its own character. The music was provided by the band DVA, whose experimental sounds perfectly match the bizarre yet friendly atmosphere of the game and underscore its gently comedic tone.
Thanks to its positive mood, originality and thoughtful, non-violent puzzles, Botanicula won favor with both children and adult players, and together with Machinarium it ranks among the titles that helped establish the reputation of Czech independent adventure game development on an international scale. The game still serves as an example that even without violence, text or complex storytelling, one can create an emotionally rich and memorable experience that even very young children can be safely guided through.
