Call of Duty: Warzone
Call of Duty: Warzone brought the series into the world of battle royale games and quickly became one of the most-played free-to-play titles of its time, available standalone without needing to own the full game. It uses the sprawling map Verdansk and, later, other locations, where up to one hundred fifty players fight for survival in a gradually shrinking radioactive zone, with the key distinguishing feature being the Gulag system, which gives fallen players a chance to return to the match through a one-on-one duel against another fallen player.
The game builds on the proven shooting foundation known from the contemporary Modern Warfare entries, so weapon handling, recoil, and character movement feel familiar even to players of the series' classic parts. Warzone adds elements typical of the battle royale genre on top of that, such as looting gear from crates, completing contracts for rewards, and stockpiling in-game cash that can be used to buy equipment or revive fallen teammates at buy stations directly on the map. The Plunder mode additionally offered an alternative without elimination mechanics, focused purely on collecting and safely banking cash before time runs out.
On PC, the game required more powerful hardware due to the large open map and the high number of players in a single session at once, which over time also led to a fairly large installation size on disk. Warzone became a massive commercial success and significantly expanded the Call of Duty player base beyond traditional fans of individual entries, becoming part of a broader Warzone platform interlinked with other contemporary titles in the series. Today, the game stands as an important example of how a large, traditionally linear action brand managed to adapt successfully and quickly to the era's battle royale trend. Gradual updates, new maps, and seasonal content kept the player community active for a long time and cemented Warzone as a lasting part of the wider Call of Duty platform.
Why play: For players craving massive battle royale action with regular new content, ideally on a more powerful PC with plenty of disk space.
