Slicing blocks to the beat of music with lightsabers; a VR hit that clicks on the first try.

Beat Saber, from 2018, is a rhythm game for virtual reality in which the player uses two controllers representing lightsabers to slice blocks flying in time with the music, while simultaneously dodging obstacles and following the correct cutting direction indicated by the color and orientation of each block. A simple, instantly understandable concept combined with energetic electronic music and intuitive physical movement quickly made it one of the most recognizable titles of the emerging era of consumer virtual reality, understandable at a glance even to people seeing a VR headset for the very first time.

The game places emphasis on fluid movement of the whole body, so it functions simultaneously as entertainment and as a form of physical activity, which contributed to its reach beyond the traditional gaming community, including people using it as a form of home exercise. Game modes gradually increased in number, along with difficulty levels aimed both at complete beginners and at players seeking a genuine challenge for their hands and reflexes. The visually minimalist but strikingly lit environment, combined with precisely synchronized music, creates the feeling that the player is themselves part of the song's rhythm, while higher difficulties add obstacles and faster sequences of blocks requiring almost dance-like precise movements. Over time, official music packs were added along with support for custom community-made tracks, which significantly extended the game's lifespan beyond the original song selection and allowed players to practice their favorite tracks from a wide range of musical genres.

Beat Saber, from studio Beat Games, became one of the proofs that virtual reality can offer entertainment understandable even to people with no other gaming experience, and to this day it remains among the best-selling and most highly praised VR titles ever made. For many people, this very game was the first reason to buy a virtual reality headset at all.
