Namco sends a dragon instead of a ship into a vertical shooter over a fantasy landscape.

Instead of a spaceship, you pilot a dragon. Dragon Spirit, originally an arcade hit from Namco, transplants the vertical shooter into a fantasy world where instead of lasers you breathe fire and instead of soaring above planets you glide over lush jungles, deserts, and caves full of prehistoric monsters.

Mechanically it's a classic vertically scrolling shmup with one clever twist: it distinguishes between aerial and ground targets. Your fiery breath mows down flying enemies, while your dropping bombs destroy whatever crawls on the ground. This dual-layer mechanic forces the player to constantly switch focus and makes the game a slightly more tactical experience than the simpler shooters of the era offered.

You gain upgrades by collecting bonuses that grow extra heads on your dragon and multiply its firepower — the sight of a three-headed beast spewing beams of fire is one of the genre's iconic moments. The game doesn't skimp on difficulty, though; it's an honest old-school challenge where every advance is earned through diligence and memorizing enemy waves.

Namco was one of the most influential arcade studios of the eighties, and Dragon Spirit is a good example of their ability to take an established genre and give it a fresh theme. Its fantasy setting stood out in a sea of sci-fi shooters, and the game won a devoted audience that appreciated both the atmosphere and the uncompromising gameplay.

The PC Engine conversion brought this arcade experience into living rooms and remains one of the titles shmup fans seek out on the platform to this day. If you want a shooter with claws, scales, and fiery breath, Dragon Spirit is an obvious choice.

Why play: A fantasy vertical shooter where you pilot a fire-breathing dragon — with a tactical distinction between aerial and ground targets and an honest arcade challenge.
