Based on the novel by Clancy and Bond; you command a nuclear submarine against the Soviet fleet in the Atlantic.

Red Storm Rising is based on the novel of the same name by Tom Clancy and Larry Bond and brings the player into a fictional third world conflict, in which they command an American Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine against the Soviet fleet in the North Atlantic. Unlike World War II simulators, here the player works with modern technology - guided torpedoes, sonar with both passive and active modes, and combat at much greater ranges, where visual contact with the enemy is the exception rather than the rule, and patient analysis of sensor data plays a decisive role rather than quick reaction to what's visible on screen.

The game skillfully combines a tactical map with a three-dimensional view of the deck and submarine controls, with sonar work and recognizing contacts by their acoustic signature playing a key role before the player ever sees the enemy at all. The campaign follows a broader military conflict in Europe, so individual missions have context, and the player has to weigh not just the immediate engagement but also the strategic impact of their actions on the whole war and the course of the Allies' ground and air operations. The sound design of the sonar and the tense, silent duels with an opponent who can be heard but not seen were among the most atmospheric passages of the genre at the time of release and captured the nervousness of real underwater combat well.

Red Storm Rising was praised on release as one of the most elaborate simulators of modern underwater warfare, and thanks to its connection to a popular novel it also reached players outside the traditional circle of war simulation fans. To this day it is considered one of the best DOS submarine titles, and its emphasis on sonar and long-range tactics influenced later simulations of modern submarines, including later games focused on the nuclear-era Cold War, and it is often mentioned as one of the best adaptations of Clancy's literary world into game form, one that managed to combine a gripping story with an honest simulation core.

Why play it: For fans of both Tom Clancy and elaborate submarine simulations — it combines a gripping Cold War story with an honest emphasis on sonar and long-range tactics that influenced later titles in the genre.
