A simulation of the carrier-based F-14 Tomcat; defending aircraft carriers and working the radar at long range.

F-14 Fleet Defender is an aerial combat simulation from MicroProse focused on the carrier-based F-14 Tomcat fighter, serving the United States Navy in defending aircraft carriers and escort formations against aerial and missile threats on the open sea. The player carries out missions ranging from patrol flights and intercepting enemy aircraft to more complex operations involving cooperation with other units of the fleet, with the game emphasizing radar management, long-range target identification, and choosing suitable guided missiles based on the type and behavior of the opponent on the radar screen.

The simulation offered a detailed model of the F-14's cockpit and systems, including the specifics of its two-seat configuration with a pilot and weapons systems officer, and the player could switch between both roles depending on the chosen difficulty level and personal preferences when planning a mission. The graphical rendering of ocean sceneries, aircraft carriers, and escort vessels was convincing for its time and complemented well the feeling of operating from the deck in the middle of the open sea, where returning to the carrier's short landing strip is its own separate challenge requiring precise adherence to the landing corridor.

F-14 Fleet Defender is valued for its thorough treatment of naval air warfare and the specifics of a carrier-based aircraft, which sets it apart from simulators focused purely on land bases and classic fighter duels over the continental mainland. It remains an interesting example of how MicroProse expanded its range of flight simulators to include increasingly specific types of aircraft, crews, and operational environments typical of a modern navy and its air forces. For fans of carrier aviation, it remains to this day one of the few simulators to cover the subject in such detail, including the need to account for the ship's limited supplies of fuel and ammunition on board.

Why play it: For fans of carrier aviation who appreciate a detailed treatment of naval air warfare, including the need to watch limited fuel and ammunition aboard the ship, this is one of the few simulators covering it in such detail.
