Belegost
Belegost is a Czech fantasy game whose name refers to the dwarven city from Norse and Tolkienesque mythology, and the game's overall setting matches that reference – a dark, underground fantasy world where the player gradually uncovers the fate of a once-mighty dwarven civilization. The player moves through winding corridors and vast underground locations, fights monsters, and gradually develops their character, with the game combining action RPG elements with exploration of environments reminiscent of classic underground dungeons full of traps and hidden treasures, which the player must work through step by step to strengthen their character before more demanding battles.
Technically, it is a typical representative of smaller domestic productions of the late 1990s – the graphics are noticeably simpler, but the game tries to compensate with a dense, dark atmosphere of the underground world and an emphasis on exploration and battles of rising difficulty. The sound design and music nicely round out the grim, oppressive mood of the underground environment through which the player must fight their way toward the goal of their quest to save the endangered dwarven kingdom, while the growing strength of enemies on deeper levels forces the player to proceed cautiously and thoughtfully.
At the time of its release, Belegost stayed rather on the margins of players' attention compared to major foreign RPGs of the same era, whose budgets and development team sizes were incomparably larger, but for fans of domestic fantasy creations it represented further evidence of smaller Czech studios' efforts to create their own genre work. Today the game is viewed mainly as a historical curiosity and an interesting testament to the overall diversity of the domestic RPG scene of the time, which tried to draw even from internationally known fantasy mythology and transpose it into its own game production with limited but honestly used resources.
