The King of Fighters R-2
The King of Fighters R-2 is a handheld distillation of one of the most influential fighting series of the nineties, and also proof that its team-based core could be brought to the Neo Geo Pocket Color. The foundation remains a battle between three-member teams, where after one fighter is knocked out the next steps in, carrying over part of their state from the previous round. The player builds their own lineup from a wide roster of familiar faces, so alongside Kyo, Iori, Terry, Mai or Athena you can put together combinations that wouldn't have made sense in the arcade original. The system works with an energy gauge for powerful techniques and lets you choose between different fighting styles, giving the game a tactical layer despite the simplified two-button controls.
Technically, it's one of the console's most accomplished showings. The characters are drawn in a cute, shortened proportion, but have enough animation frames for the individual phases of attacks to stay legible and the game to remain fair. The background color palette distinguishes each arena without taking away from the clarity of the foreground, and the frame rate stays stable even during flashy finishers. The sound recycles themes from the arcade entries and, even compressed, keeps their recognizable melodies, so the tournament atmosphere survives even coming out of a tiny speaker.
At the time, the game was seen as proof that SNK took its handheld seriously and wasn't just releasing lightweight side products for it. For console owners it represented the main fighting event for head-to-head matches over the link cable, and for years it served as the reference example of how to bring a complex system down to limited controls. Today what stands out most is the pace: rounds are short, restarts instant, and the cycle of building teams keeps pulling you back even after dozens of tournaments played. Anyone familiar with later portable entries in the series will find their direct blueprint here. It remains one of the few fighting games where even the order of your team members is worth thinking about.
